First Dance Recital

Last week Elina had her first dance recital. We were so excited! T, J and J's boyfriend, M, came from Austin to see the big performance. It was held in the teacher's backyard, so it was nice that it was somewhat informal. The girls were going to do some warm-up exercises and then a little dance routine to Singin' In the Rain with their raincoats on.

We had "high hopes" for Elina since I had been practicing the moves with her and she seemed to know what to do. But once she got up there in front of everyone, she was like a deer in headlights. Initially, she just wouldn't move or respond. We had to snap her out of it by calling out her name a few times. Then there was some movement. When Singin' In the Rain started, Elina was doing pretty well. But then some girls got distracted by a roly poly bug and of course Elina had to go check things out. Elina just gets easily distracted and it takes her awhile to get back on track again. So by the end, she didn't even do her arabesque after all the girls did theirs. So sad. We had been practicing her arabesque for awhile now. Boo.

Despite all of this, the recital was still really cute. I was just a little embarrassed that Elina was "that" kid who was distracted. But I can understand that they aren't used to dancing outside and they aren't used to a lot of people staring at them. Oh well.

We're going to miss dance class. Elina had so much fun dancing with all her friends every week.
