Bad Timing

Last year my gift for B's 30th birthday was to fly his best friend, JL, out for a visit. Well, B just turned 31 and JL hadn't even come out for a visit yet. (Sorry, JL, I have to state the facts first.) It's not for lack of trying though...JL is in the midst of medical school, so he hasn't been able to go anywhere. Finally, JL managed to get 3 days off in a row, so he decided to use the time off to come out for a visit. We were so excited for this, especially since we decided to make it a surprise for B.

The original plan was for J to pick JL up in the evening and then surprise B at home, but after many delays it turned out that B and I had to go out to the airport to pick JL up ourselves at 11:30pm. Luckily, my cousin from Taiwan is visiting the US for a month and I had already told B that she would be coming to visit us some time during her stay (which is the truth). So that evening I told B that my dad had called at the last minute to tell me that we had to go pick her up at the airport. I know this seems implausible to many of you, but if you know my dad you know that he can be very last-minute.

So as we're driving to the terminal, B says, "Ok...do you see an Asian?...Wha-??" While he was looking for my cousin, he spotted JL and was in complete shock. It was so awesome! Then we got JL home and after that things went downhill...at least for me and B.

See, on Tuesday of that week Eli had an awful bout with a stomach bug. He had really bad diarrhea. It was so sad to watch because he didn't understand what was happening to his body. He was shaking, having accidents, crying in pain. It was terrible. In the end we had to throw diapers on the poor boy because he couldn't control anything anymore. Needless to say, by the time JL arrived on Thursday, it was time for me and B to deal with the stomach bug. Talk about bad timing!

For most of JL's stay B was taking naps or just keeled over. B also did a lot of other disgusting stuff that we won't write about on this blog...ever. B was definitely in worse shape than I was, which made the situation even sadder since JL is B's friend. We had lots of things planned for JL for his visit...places to eat, places to go. Of course since we had a stomach bug, we could not eat anything except for applesauce, bananas, rice, and toast. BORING! (And B couldn't even manage to eat most of the stuff that I just listed.)

Luckily, JL's other main reason for visiting was to come play with our kids. He entertained the kids and helped around the house while B and I just laid around like 2 lumps on a log. Not very good hosts, right?? I know, but we really couldn't help it! Seriously.
We were just thankful to have JL around to keep our kids busy, or else they would've spent the entire time watching television. JL was nice enough to run around with them outside, chase them around the house, let them ride on his back (like he was a horse), and play hide and seek with them. The kids LOVED Uncle JL and didn't want him to leave. Who would want this kind of playmate to leave?? Even Evie let JL carry her only after a short period of time (which is amazing since she has crazy stranger anxiety).
Eli definitely developed an attachment to JL. Since Elina was at school for most of Friday, JL was Eli's personal playmate for a good portion of the day. Eli had a blast with Uncle JL. It was funny because Eli called Uncle JL "Uncle Jenny" the entire time. It was really cute. After we dropped off JL at the airport, Eli just cried and cried. Poor boy.

We really felt bad about not doing much while JL was here, but we're really glad he came out for a visit. We just hope he'll come back for another visit sooner than later. Next time we'll try to be in good health. We miss you already, JL!(On a side note: Elina ended up vomiting on Saturday right before JL left. So sad that we've all had this terrible bug. Now we're just waiting to see if J or Evie get it. The worst part is that because we were all so sick, Elina missed out on her school's annual Dad N Me Campout. We were all sad about it, especially Elina. Let's just say that this stomach bug really ruined a lot of things for us this weekend.)
