Fire Prevention Week

This past week was Fire Prevention Week, so our preschool girls (Elina, E, K, and L) took their first field trip to a nearby fire station. It was a total success and the girls had so much fun. Well, most of them had fun. Elina was very wary from the beginning. I think it was because the fireman had a mustache. Initially, she didn't even want to go inside the fire station. It was even hard to get her to stand near the fireman to listen to his talk. As you can see from this picture, Elina is less than enthused. She looks like a loner...she looks so sad!
Then when the fireman finished his talk, he asked each of the girls to give him a high five. Guess who refused to give him a high five? You got it! Elina would not give the man who risks his life fighting fires a high five. Wow.
After that, the fireman showed the girls a thermal imaging camera, gave them a tour of the fire engine, and let them hear the siren. It was such a great day! But the girls were really funny with some of their responses to the fireman's questions. I mean, they're 3. They're going to answer questions with irrelevant information most of the time. Case in point--

Fireman: What do you do if you find matches or lighters?
[The girls are all looking at each other blankly because they have NO idea what matches and lighters are! So we quickly and briefly explain that they start fires.]
K: Oh, you get a policeman.
Fireman: Well, you can just get your Mom and Dad.
K: Ok, but then you get the policeman.

The other thing is that the girls forgot a lot of the fire prevention information that was taught to them that VERY morning....because they're 3.

Fireman: What do you do if your clothes catch on fire?
Girls: Run away!
Fireman: No, you stop, drop and roll.
Girls: Oh.

At this point, A, the teacher for the day, tells me that she JUST taught the girls about stop, drop and roll. Oh well. In one ear...

When we went out back for lunch, Elina was in a better mood. Then the station dog came out to see us. The girls all loved that. So here's the final picture I caught for the day. Obviously, it ended perfectly because we finally got a smile out of Elina!
