This year the Barnum and Bailey Circus came to San Antonio for the 4th of July weekend. We weren't planning to take Elina because we didn't know if she would be scared or excited. But since all of Elina's neighborhood friends were going, we felt the peer pressure and decided to take Elina after all.
It was actually more enjoyable than I had thought it would be. Even J, who dislikes the circus, was entertained. We went to the pre-show to see animals and acrobats up-close. The animal side is actually really sad because it's just all these animals inside pens and cages--like the zoo, but worse because space is so limited. The acrobat side was more fun. We got to see clowns juggling and jumping on trampolines. We even got to see Asia, the elephant who can paint (abstract art, that is).
The show was pretty entertaining, although J and I agreed that we could really do without the animals in the show. It's just sad to see a bunch of beautiful horses run around in a small ring. The tiger part was scary because the tigers looked like they wanted to claw out the trainer's eyes. They were so angry and constantly showing their teeth. Yikes. The only animal part that was really cute was the dog act. They had poodles and toy dogs doing all sorts of tricks. One poodle even rode one of those razor scooters! It was pretty cute (even J thought so).
Elina liked the acrobat stuff, especially when they climbed up to the top of these very high poles. She was very worried and kept asking, "How are they going to get down??" Elina applauded when everyone else applauded and danced when she heard music playing. But after a few acts, she started to
lose interest and asked to go home. So we left early, after the intermission. But we were ok with that because we didn't have to deal with the long lines and big crowds exiting the Alamodome. (Am I old, or what?)
All in all, it was a fun time and I'm glad we went. Now Elina knows what the circus is, J isn't so anti-circus anymore, and I got to see a poodle ride a scooter. What a day!
